Are These South Dakota Counties Stuck in the Wrong Time Zone?
Ahhhh, South Dakota. The home of two Time Zones, the Central Standard and Mountain Standard Time Zones. Let's face it, when traveling through the Mount Rushmore State, trying to keep track of which counties are in which time zones can get down right confusing.
Now, to make matters worse, some "social media experts" are insisting that several South Dakota counties are actually stuck in the Central Time Zone, when they really should have been place in the Mountain Time Zone all along.
Why is this? Well, as it turns out, it's all about geography and longitude.

Recently, Random Facts of the World's Facebook Page caused quite the stir, when they posted a map showing all of the counties in the U.S. that were "stuck in the wrong time zone". According to the post, several South Dakota counties have longitudes that should place them directly within the Mountain Time Zone, yet, for some strange reason, they've always been in the Central Time Zone. Here are the South Dakota Counties listed:
Marshall, Day, Clark, Miner, Hanson, Hutchinson, Bon Homme, Brown, Spink, Beadle, Sanborn, Davison, Douglas, Charles Mix, McPherson, Edmunds, Faulk, Hand, Hyde, Buffalo, Jerauld, Aurora, Campbell, Walworth, Potter, Sully, Stanley, Jones, Lyman, Brule, Gregory, and Tripp.
What do you think? Does it make a difference which time zone these counties are in, or is the OP on to something here? Several posters argued that these counties actually "waste money" by operating in the wrong time zone on a year by year basis.
