Blake Shelton Shares Cover of Bobby Bare’s ‘Tequila Sheila’ [LISTEN]
Blake Shelton throws it back with a new honky-tonk version of "Tequila Shiela," a re-imagining of Bobby Bare's 1980 hit. Readers can press play above to hear the rowdy bar tune. The release follows Shelton's announcement of his Friends and Heroes 2019 Tour. The cover is the first glimpse of Shelton's Friends and Heroes Sessions, paying homage to the artists that shaped the country star's future.
“One of the coolest things I’ve been able to do in my career, because I’ve been fortunate, is be a little selfish along the way and be able to record some songs that I grew up loving,” Shelton says in a press release. “I feel like they have helped shape who I am as an artist and were what inspired me to want to be a country singer. I recorded this song and didn’t really have a plan for it – I just wanted to have my own version! I’m a huge fan, and I always felt like Bobby Bare’s personality was the kind I wanted to have as an artist too.”
The cover opens with a vocal introduction from Bare before Shelton launches into the outlaw lyrics. "Pour me another Tequila Sheila / Take off that red satin dress," he sings, with the help of a rowdy bar crowd chiming along in the background. "I crossed the border and I beat the dealer / For all the damn gold in Juarez / I feel like old Pancho Villa, Sheila / And I got the pesos to spend) / So pour me another Tequilla Sheila / And lay down and love me again."
"Tequila Shiela" originally appeared on Bare's 1980 album, Down and Dirty. Shelton says that fans should be on the watch for more throwback tunes leading up to the headlining tour, which kicks off Feb. 14, 2019.
