The cemeteries in the Black Hills of South Dakota may have many famous old west people buried in them, like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood. But, in Sioux Falls celebrity graves tend to be those of important political figures from southeastern South Dakota history. Here are seven of the most famous people buried in Sioux Falls.
Nils Boe - Woodlawn Cemetery
September 10, 1913 - June 30, 1992The son of Norwegian immigrants, Boe was a lawyer, Lieutenant in the Navy during WWII, federal judge and South Dakota Governor in the 1960s.
Charles Christopherson - Woodlawn Cemetery
July 23, 1871 - November 2, 1951Born in Minnisota, Christopherson moved to South Dakota in 1890. He practiced law for many years in the city. In 1912 he was elected to the South Dakota State House of Representatives. In 1919, he was elected the US Congressman from South Dakota and served until 1933.
Richard Francis Kneip - Saint Michaels Cemetery
January 7, 1933 - March 9, 1987Richard Francis Kneip was South Dakota's Governor from 1971 to 1978, then served as United States Ambassador to Singapore.
Vincent Lloyd Skaff - Saint Michaels Cemetery
June 1, 1917 - July 3, 2003Lloyd was born in Beresford, South Dakota and went to college in Yankton. in the 1950 he started a long career broadcasting baseball games in Chicago with WGN-TV and WGN Radio. He did Cubs play-by-play for many years.
In 1961 he made history the first sportscaster to interview a sitting president live at a baseball opener when he talked with President Kennedy.
George Mickelson - Woodlawn Cemetery
June 1, 1917 - July 3, 2003Mickelson was South Dakota's Governor from 1947 to 1951. His son, George Mickelson,was also Governor of South Dakota, from 1987 to 1993.
Richard Pettigrew - Woodlawn Cemetery
July 23, 1848 - October 5, 1926Pettigrew was a lawyer and businessman in Sioux Falls. he served in the Dakota territorial government and was later elected as South Dakota's first Senator to the United States Senate, serving from 1889 to March 4, 1901.
Pettigrew left his home to the city of Sioux Falls in his will, today we know it as the The Pettigrew Museum. Richard F. Pettigrew Elementary School is named for him.
Joan Tabor - Woodlawn Cemetery
September 16, 1932 - December 18, 1968Tabor was an actress that was born in Sioux Falls. She made her feature film debut in 1961's The Teenage Millionaire. She appeared on many television series like Have Gun Will Travel, Bat Masterson, Perry Mason and Mister Ed.
