Whatever Happened To K-Tel Records?
All your favorite songs on one great album...or maybe a two-record set! Wow, it doesn't get any better than that!
If you were upright, taking oxygen and paying attention on the planet in the 1970's and 1980's, you saw them on television...the infomercials for the greatest music product ever from K-Tel Records.
The latest greatest hits from the latest greatest artists all in one great package, and at an unbelievably low price. From the best dance songs to the best one-hit wonders to the goofy greats that topped the charts to...well, just about any kind of music you wanted. K-Tel had them all.
And we bought them all. From 1976-1981 K-Tel sold $150 million in albums around the world. And remember, that was back in the day when a million bucks meant something! Heck, their '25 Polka Greats' sold a million and a half copies in the United States alone.
Yep, those catchy TV commercials (or infomercials) did their job. They got us hooked (and perhaps you bought 'Hooked On Classics?). So whatever happened to K-Tel Records?
Oh, nothing really. They still move a lot of music, They distribute more than 200,000 songs worldwide each year through digital platforms, including Amazon and iTunes.
But the commercials. I miss the commercials for those great songs like the 'Goofy Greats'. So what do you say, lets relive that one here:
