The city of Sioux Falls is growing and growing. Since 2020, it's seen a growth rate of over 7%, with current population estimates hovering around 220,000.

To put that into perspective, if you are a person who was born in Sioux Falls in 1970, you began your life in a city with a population of around 72,000 residents, about the size of present-day St. Cloud, Minnesota. That means that Sioux Falls has increased in size by a whopping 205% in the past 55 years.

And with all that growth (especially recently), there are three surprising cities that Sioux Falls has now eclipsed in population. Take a look.

Arkansas's state capital (and biggest city) has been growing at a rapid rate in recent years, but not as much as Sioux Falls. The current population estimates for Little Rock, Arkansas are around 202,000 residents. However, the city's metro population is MUCH bigger. Sioux Falls metro is a little over 300,000 residents, but Little Rock is closing in on 800,000.

This one was a total shocker for me. Des Moines has an estimated population of 214,000 people. It's only slightly smaller than Sioux Falls, but this is the first time in the two cities history that Sioux Falls has eclipsed Des Moines in population. However, it should be noted that (just like before) Des Moines has a significantly bigger metro population, with over 700,000 residents.

Montgomery, Alabama

Alabama's capital has lost population in recent years. In 2020, the city had a little over 200,000 residents, but in the 5 years since, it's down to roughly 195,000.

What cities might Sioux Falls surpass next? South Dakota's biggest city is closing in on Salt Lake City, Utah, Tacoma, Washington, and, even Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
