Mary Micheals of the Sioux Falls Health Department says local firefighters will be installing hundreds of smoke alarms and health department personnel will be providing free blood pressure checks in the Hayward Neighborhood on Saturday.

"The smoke alarms are our best defense in our homes...to be able to get out safely.  Regarding the blood pressure checks---when you're taking charge of your health by knowing your blood pressure numbers, you're going to prevent heart disease."

Right now, Tony Burke of the American Red Cross in Sioux Falls is looking for volunteers to assist in the Saturday event.

"Call the Red Cross at 605 336 2448 or come on by our office at 808 North West.  We need lots of volunteers.  We're looking for about 150 volunteers."

When an individual, community or business is healthy, Burke says they will be more resilient in times of emergency and will recover sooner.
