Gregg Allman Celebrations Planned Around ‘Southern Blood’ Album Release
Fans will come together to celebrate Gregg Allman's life in September, around the time of the release of his final album, Southern Blood. Not one, but three events, in three different cities, will take place.
As reported by AJC.com, the first of the events is Southern Blood: Celebrating Gregg Allman, which is being held in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sept. 7, at the Clive Davis Theater at the Grammy Museum. For the event, Allman's son Devon will join Allman's manager and friend Michael Lehman, producer Don Was and Gregg Allman Band member and musical director Scott Sharraf to share stories about and memories of the late singer-songwriter while also treating the audience to some music.
A second event will take place in a city that was close to Allman's heart: the birthplace of the Allman Brothers Band, Macon, Ga. On Sept. 9 the mayor of the city will declare Allman's birthday, Dec. 8, as Gregg Allman Day. In addition to that special honor, Allman will also posthumously be granted keys to the city of Macon, the same city in which he is buried. The Allman Brothers Band Museum, located at the Big House in Macon, will be the backdrop for that event.
The final celebration of Allman's life and career is scheduled to take place during the 18th annual Americana Music Festival, on Sept. 15, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater. Southern Blood: Celebrating Gregg Allman will feature Devon Allman and Lehman, in addition to Buddy Miller, Joan Osborne, Pony Bradshaw, John Paul White and Grammy Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman.
Southern Blood was recorded at the iconic Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Allman was hard at work on the record in the weeks before his death. Produced by Was, the album features cameos from Jackson Browne and a number of legendary local session musicians, including a horn section helmed by saxophonists Jay Collins and Art Edmaiston and trumpeter Marc Franklin.
Southern Blood is set for release on Sept. 8. It is available to pre-order now.
