Where Are We At With Farm Work?

Dry conditions and above normal temperatures across most areas of South Dakota allowed the spring planting to advance.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says corn planting is 90 percent complete, ahead of the five-year average of 86 percent. Forty-eight percent of the crop was emerged, equal to average.

Soybeans were 64 percent planted, ahead of the 49 percent average. The crop is 20 percent emerged, ahead of the 15 percent average.

The winter wheat condition is rated 36 percent fair, 56 percent good and 2 percent excellent.

Topsoil moisture supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 12 percent short, 83 percent adequate and 4 percent surplus.

The week ending May 25 had 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork, which included mending fences, moving cattle to pasture, planting and applying herbicide treatments.
