When Will South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota See The Supermoons?
The night skies in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota are full of beauty. Sky gazers of the Sioux Empire are in for a special treat in the sky this month.
Not one, but two supermoons will grace the South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota skies. Experts are calling this the "double feature in August: a pair of supermoons culminating in a rare blue moon." This is going to be a sight to see!
Our news partners at Dakota News Now are reporting the first supermoon will occur on Tuesday, August 1st...that's tonight! The moon will look "slightly brighter and bigger than normal. That’s because it will be closer than usual, just 222,159 miles (357,530 kilometers) away, thus the supermoon label." The second supermoon is set to shine on Wednesday, August 30th. It will be slightly closer. The supermoon will be about 222,043 miles (357,344 kilometers) away. Since this would be the second supermoon in the month, experts at NASA call this the "blue moon." The last time two supermoons occurred in the same month was January 2018.
You probably won't need a telescope to get a glimpse of the supermoon! The weather for the first supermoon tonight is looking pretty okay too! I spoke with Dakota News Now Meterlogist Aaron Doudna and he says the Sioux Empire has a good chance to see the supermoon.
"We're going to have a little bit of cloud cover around the Sioux Empire. However, I still think we will have enough gaps in the sky to see the bright supermoon. Temperatures will also feel pretty nice sitting around the mid-60s."
You don't want to miss two glorious supermoons! According to Italian astronomer Gianluca Masi, we won't see two supermoons in one month until 2037. Enjoy the night sky. Sit back, relax, and watch the amazing supermoons in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota.
