What Could Classic Rockers Three Dog Night Have In Common With Country Music?
Three Dog Night was one of the biggest pop/rock bands in the world in the 1970's.
They amassed 13 Gold Albums, and had 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, including pop/rock classics like 'Mama Told Me Not To Come', 'Black and White', 'Just An Old Fashioned Love Song' and 'Shambala'.
Ok, you say, that's all well and good but...what in the world do they have in common with country Music??
Well, two of their biggest hits were written by a name very familiar to Classic Country Music fans.
'Never Been To Spain' was a Top 5 pop/rock smash for the band in 1971.
But it was another 1971 #1 pop/rock chart-topper that became their signature song. It was called 'Joy To The World', and there's a very good possibility you can sing the opening line.

And both those Three Dog Night hit's were written by Hoyt Axton.
Yes, the same Hoyt Axton that wrote and sang 'When The Mornin' Comes', 'Boney Fingers' and 'Della and The Dealer'. Oh, and by the way Hoyt's mother wrote the Elvis rock classic 'Heartbreak Hotel!)
Hoyt also had an acting career, which you know if you were one of the millions that loved 'Gremlins'.
Hoyt passed away in October of 1999.
