Two More Turkey Farms in South Dakota Confirmed to Have Deadly Bird Flu

(AP) - Two more turkey farms in South Dakota have been confirmed to have some form of the deadly bird flu that's swept through poultry operations across the Midwest.

State Veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven tells the Yankton Press and Dakotan the two farms in Yankton and Hutchinson Counties have around 115,000 birds combined. He says crews planned to begin euthanizing birds at both farms Wednesday.

It's still not known whether the farms have been impacted by the highly pathogenic H5N2 strain. State officials are waiting for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to confirm the exact strain.

The H5N2 strain of the virus has affected more than 32 million birds in the Midwest so far.

Oedekoven cites South Dakota's less dense poultry industry as one reason the state has had fewer farms affected.
