The World’s Largest Time Capsule in Nebraska is About to Open
The World's Largest Time Capsule, known as the "Seward County Courthouse Time Capsule," is found in the great state of Nebraska. It was buried in 1975 and is set to be opened in 2025.
But what's inside, and why was it buried in the first place might surprise you.
Welcome, to Seward, Nebraska, Home to the World's Biggest Time Capsule
Back in 1974, Harold Davisson, a local furniture store owner in Seward, decided to build a time capsule for the town's upcoming, Bicentennial Fourth of July Celebration. Harold was worried that his grandchildren wouldn't remember him, or the day and age in which he lived, and thought it would be fun to seal thousands of items from "1970s America" inside a vault and seal it for 50 years.
Inside the 45-ton vault was a wide array of items, including bottles of alcohol, a women's bikini bottom, a men's leisure suit, and even a brand-new Chevy Vega.
The Time Capsule made National News Headlines from the likes of the New York Times and Good Morning America and was officially dedicated on July 4, 1975.
In 1983, Davisson added a Pyramid to top it off and the sight has drawn in tourists from all over the country ever since.
Fittingly, the Seward Time Capsule is scheduled to open in a little over a year from now, on July 4, 2025, for the fiftieth anniversary. You can bet it'll be a Fourth of July no one in Seward, Nebraska will soon forget.
