South Dakota is a pretty unique state. It, of course, has amazing monuments like Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, along with breathtaking sights to behold, such as the Badlands and the Black Hills.

It's home to the Sanford Underground Research Facility, an old mine now used for cutting-edge scientific experiments, located almost 5,000 feet below the surface. And it's also home to Wall Drug, one of the most famous roadside attractions in the US, that still serves free, ice-cold water to its guests.

However, many of the state's own residents have no idea that an isolated spot within the borders of South Dakota holds the distinct title of the "Continental Point of Inaccessibility" of the entire North American Continent. But what does that mean? Why is it important? And where can you find it?

The farthest spot from any ocean is located right here in South Dakota. It's known as the "Continental Point of Inaccessibility" and can be found in between the towns of Allen in Bennet County, and Kyle in Oglala County, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The point can be found in a valley in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It's quite an adventure just finding the spot and involves driving on rural roads and hiking rather rugged terrain. Keep in mind, this is located on native land and it's advised to ask for permission before attempting to find it.

The nearest coastline to the "Continental Point of Inaccessibility" is the Pacific Ocean, a staggering 1,025 miles away. The Atlantic Ocean is an even greater distance from the point, at 1,450 miles away.

There is no specific marker indicating the continental point of inaccessibility, however, it still gets visitors. Take a look at the video below, as two gentlemen from the UK attempt to find the point.
