The 3 Types of Rattlesnakes That Dwell in Iowa
When most people think of Iowa, they imagine endless cornfields, endless prairies, and tractors at every intersection. The one thing you'd never imagine to see in the Hawkeye State is a rattlesnake. But, believe it or not, Iowa is home to three distinct species of rattlers within its borders.
Where in Iowa can you find these 3 types of rattlesnakes? The answer may surprise you.

According to the A-Z Animals, these are the 3 distinct species of rattlesnake that dwell in Iowa.
Prairie Rattlesnake
The Prairie Rattlesnake can be found within the grasslands and prairie areas of Iowa. Experts say that they often travel several miles from their den for food each day and are not dangerous to humans unless they feel provoked.
Timber Rattlesnake
Timber rattlers are very common in the Hawkeye State. The good news? They are extremely shy of humans. The bad news? They're one of the most venomous snakes in the entire U.S.
The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake
These snakes are a very rare find in Iowa, which is probably a good thing. They also migrate in the winter and are only spotted in the Hawkeye State in its hottest months.
