As we prepare for today's delicious Thanksgiving feasts, filled with oil, grease and fat, Minnesota officials are warning residents to "stop the fatberg" and avoid some costly repairs.

This time of year (more than any other) it's important to keep in mind just what you're pouring down your kitchen drain.

The major worry is that too much grease coming down the pipes will not only cause a slow down but also clog the city's pipes up entirely, leading to a costly (and avoidable) mess.

Take a look at this video from Kare11 to see what Minnesota municipalities are dealing with this holiday season.

So, what can you do to "Stop the Fatberg" this holiday season? Well, there's several relatively easy ways to help out.

  1. Trash it: Once the oil has cooled, it's safe to trash small amounts of grease, rather than dumping it down the drain. Just put it into a container you're willing to throw away.
  2. Recycle it: You can also safely dispose of your grease at your local recycling center. Call your local municipality ahead to make sure they accept grease (most do) and store it in a milk jug for traveling purposes.
  3. Compost it: Many cooking oils can safely be added to the compost of your garden. Don't have a garden? Ask a local family member or friend if they'll take it off your hands. If they need some persuading, just offer up a piece of pumpkin pie and you should be good to go.
