You never know what you're going to encounter when you're on duty for the South Dakota Highway Patrol. But I don't think State Troopers expected to see a pet monkey while patrolling a South Dakota treasure.

Now this is something that doesn't happen everyday in South Dakota! Say hello to the two-year-old pet monkey Julie.

Two State Troopers with the South Dakota Highway Patrol we're on duty around Spearfish Canyon. It's common to see wildlife at Spearfish Canyon like mountain goats, bobcats, and even porcupines. However, a monkey wearing a cute outfit is not on the list of animals to discover in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The South Dakota Highway Patrol shared the wild moment in a Facebook post.

Trooper Hall and Trooper Bailey with the South Dakota Highway Patrol met Julie and her owner Cintia. Looks like Julie showed interest in joining the force too!

While patrolling Spearfish Canyon, Trooper Hall and Trooper Bailey had the opportunity to meet a few new friends! Cintia and Julie (Cintia’s 2 year old pet monkey). It may take some convincing, but we are hoping Julie becomes a part of our team. She took a particular interest in the SDHP Campaign hat!

Cintia and Julie were traveling through the state enjoying the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Julie has become an internet sensation across South Dakota.

That's monkey business..lol I love it

A monkey would be a fitting addition

That was not on my Rally bingo card! What fun!

Julie is a great name for a monkey! I wish I could meet her someday

Omg love the monkey

Can I Legally Own a Pet Monkey in South Dakota?

I'm sure people are wondering if owning a pet monkey in South Dakota is legal after seeing Julie. I did some research and it turns out...you can own a monkey in South Dakota! According to the South Dakota Animal Industry Board, potential owners would need a permit to keep a monkey. You also have to follow state guidelines when it comes to escape protocols, housing, and inspections. Get more details here.

Thanks to the South Dakota Highway Patrol for keeping our state and roads safe and for giving us a smile thanks to Julie.

You will need a zoo permit to harbor a raccoon dog. That's a real species. It's a small wild dog with a black facial mask and long fur, native to the forests of Asia.
