The suspect that wounded a McCook County Deputy around 3:00 AM on Wednesday morning (May 3) has finally surrendered to authorities.

KDLT News is reporting that 37-year-old Matthew Rumbolz of Montrose, South Dakota surrendered himself to authorities at 3:45 PM on Wednesday afternoon.

According to KDLT News, Rumbolz was found in a ditch armed with a shotgun by law enforcement agencies around 10:00 AM.

The incident began in northern McCook County early Wednesday morning when a deputy stopped Rumbolz's vehicle for a traffic-related offense. Rumbolz fled the scene of the traffic stop and ended up in Lake County, near the intersection of 453 and 243rd Street where he exchanged gunfire with a McCook County Deputy wounding him with a gunshot to the arm.

The suspect then fled the scene of the shooting on foot, and the deputy was transported to a Madison, South Dakota hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

Several law enforcement agencies, including SWAT teams, pursued Rumbolz where they eventually found him located near the intersection where the shooting happened just south of Madison.

KDLT News reports that negotiations between authorities and Rumbolz transpired over the course of a 3 to 4 hour time frame. The communications ultimately led to the peaceful surrender of Rumbolz.

Authorities have yet to say if alcohol or drugs played a part in the incident.

The name of the wounded deputy, along with the various charges Rumbolz is facing have not been released at this time.
