Study Shows Connection between Teeth and Cancer
Women with a history of periodontal disease are at a greater risk of developing cancer. That according to a new study appearing in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
More than 65,000 women, ages 54 to 86 were monitored. Those with periodontal disease carried more than three-times the risk of esophageal cancer, nearly twice the risk of gallbladder cancer and a 14% higher risk of cancer in general.
Researchers say the connection to cancer is not yet fully understood, but one possible explanation could be oral pathogens entering the blood circulation.
