I truly believe that small businesses are the backbone of the Sioux Empire, especially here in South Dakota. Sadly, some small businesses are struggling more than others this year.

The Korner Grocery in Pierre, South Dakota has been a part of the state capital's makeup for decades. Now owner Larry Robinson is hoping for more foot traffic during this trying time.

What Is Happening At The Korner Grocery Shop?

It wasn't too long ago when owner Larry Robinson had to temporarily close the Korner Grocery due to personal health reasons. Larry has been battling cancer and has been open about his progress on the shop's Facebook page by providing updates.

In the latest update, Larry was honest about his current condition while asking patrons to stop by the store.

Larry has noticed business has been slower lately. Even though hours have and will change, the Korner Grocery still needs its loyal shoppers.

Since April the cancer has spread through my body. It has spread to my lungs and bones. My right hip has become very painful so have been using a cane. They will be giving 10 rounds of radiation on my hip. I have been lucky that I have still been able to continue to work so far. How much longer remains to be seen.
I am asking that people maybe stop in a little more to shop we are slow along with alot of other businesses. We closed for a few hours on Tuesday for Dr appts. That will probably start happening more often. Just asking to shop our small store a little more often. Thank you Larry

My Top 5 Favorite South Dakota Made Foods

As I was slicing a piece of cheese off my block of Dimock Dairy Colby cheese and boiling a ring of Bluebird Locker German sausage on the stove, I started thinking, "What foods is South Dakota known for?'

Then I realized the state is known for some of my favorite foods, are they're actually made right here in South Dakota!

So, I decided to search my cupboards and refrigerator looking for other South Dakota-made foods and came up with my Top 5.

Gone But Not Forgotten - Iconic Sioux Falls: Whiffer's Sandwiches

The Merriam-Webster definition of iconic is "widely recognized and well-established." That would definitely describe Whiffer's Sandwiches which used to call North Minnesota Avenue home.

The gone but not forgotten sandwich shop was located in an old house at 1133 North Minnesota Avenue. It served sandwiches to Sioux Falls from November 1978 until the summer of 2020.
