SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota will not participate in the next round of refugee resettlements announced by the White House last week.

Tim Jurgens is the director of Lutheran Social Service's Center for New Americans, which is the only resettlement program in the state. He tells the Argus Leader that the agency won't take part in the effort because of the immigration debate in the state.

The group also ignored the previous White House effort to spur resettlement. The organization has a yearly cap of 420 refugees that it brings to South Dakota.

The White House last week announced that the United States will strive to take in 110,000 refugees from around the world in the coming year, in what would be a nearly 30 percent increase from the 85,000 allowed in over the previous year.
