What Is The Ursids Meteor Shower?

According to EarthSky, the Ursids Meteor Shower is a "low-key meteor shower" that always reaches its peak around the winter solstice. This meteor shower is active from now until December 26th. However, the best time to see the Ursid Meteor Shower at its peak will be on the evening of Sunday, December 21st, through Monday, December 22nd.

The experts at EarthSky explain that the Ursids Meteor Shower could produce five to ten meteors per hour, and with a New Moon in the sky, it will be dark enough for meteor watching.

Where Can I See The Ursids Meteor Shower in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota?

The best chance to see the Ursids Meteor Shower is away from city lights and in the country after midnight. Look north and "face towards the constellation Ursa Minor (the Little Dipper), as the meteors appear to radiate from this area." You don't need anything but your eyes! Just look up to the sky and see bright shooting stars!

The Ursids Meteor Shower is set to be one of the biggest winter stargazing events in 2025. It's a great way to celebrate the end of the year, too!
