It's a four-letter word no one wants to hear, especially before Halloween. S-N-O-W. And while we knew our first snowfall in the Sioux Empire was coming sooner or later, seeing it in the forecast for late October is still a bit of a shocker.

In its latest extended forecast, The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls is calling for a chance of snow showers as early as this coming weekend.

According to the NWS, the city of Sioux Falls has a 50% chance of snow showers on Saturday night. The good news? It looks like that's the only chance of snow we have in the foreseeable future. However, temperatures look to be trending down into the 30s for highs as early as next week.

That means we are on track for our first visit from Jack Frost on October 28th. Is that earlier than usual? Yes. But it's not even close to the earliest snowfall the city of Sioux Falls has seen throughout its history.

The earliest Sioux Falls has seen snow was only a few years ago. Back on September 9, 2020, the city received a trace of snowfall. Also, in September of 1939, the city received a trace amount. So, while it is a little early, it's nowhere near the record.
