What is a 'Strawberry Moon' and why is this so rare?

According to The Weather Channel, a Strawberry Moon was named after "Native American tribes for the moment when wild strawberries are at their peak of ripeness, comes every June." The Strawberry Moon is considered to be the last full moon of spring. This moon is predicted to be "as large and low in the sky as it will be until 2043." The peak of the Strawberry Moon will be on June 11th at approximately 3:44 AM Eastern Time, which will be 2:44 AM for the Central Time Zone.

Full moons that are low to the sky are due to major lunar standstills. Time Magazine explains that a lunar standstill "causes the moonrise and moonset to occur at the most extreme north and southernmost points." This happens every 18.6 years. The last full moon at a lunar standstill occurred in 2006.

Unfortunately, it appears parts of the Sioux Empire will not have a chance to see the Strawberry Moon. Some skies will be cloudy, and other areas will be obscured by rain. Here's the Sioux Falls weather forecast for Wednesday from our partners at Dakota News Now:

  • During the day: Mostly sunny skies with a chance of showers or storms after 2 PM, high of 88 degrees
  • During the evening: Mostly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms throughout the night, low of 58 degrees

Who knows? Maybe the Sioux Falls area will get lucky and see the Strawberry Moon!
