Sioux Falls Great Plains Zoo ‘Heartbroken’ After Red Wolf Passes
It has been a rollercoaster of emotions for the staff at the Sioux Falls Great Plains Zoo. One minute they are welcoming summer fun into their family, and the next they are saying goodbye to others.
In an emotional Facebook post, the staff at the Great Plains Zoo made the devastating announcement that one of their beloved American red wolves has passed away.

Uyosi was a 13-year-old Red Wolf who was experiencing "experiencing age-related mobility issues, for which he’d been under medical care." He's been declining and staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him. It's not a decision they take lightly at the Sioux Falls Great Plains Zoo.
Uyosi's partner was Camellia and together they welcomed six pups into the world.

These two got together thanks to the efforts of "The Association of Zoos and Aquariums SAFE American Red Wolf program, to promote genetic diversity and bring this critically endangered species back from the brink of extinction. The wolves quickly bonded, forming a devoted partnership." Staff at the Great Plains Zoo said it was an honor to witness Uyosi be an amazing father and mate for the last three years.
You can tell Uyosi was a favorite around this pack. Carnivore Area Supervisor Angela Blommer says he was nothing short of amazing, especially towards Camellia.
“His bond with Camellia was remarkable and such an honor to witness. Camellia was very shy and refused to step out of her comfort zone until he walked up to her. As soon as he walked up and locked eyes on her, she ran to him. From then on, if she felt unsettled, she’d wait for him to look her direction and give the ‘let’s go.’”
You can see Camellia, as well as one female pup and the four male pups at the Great Plains Zoo wondering their new habitat.
You might be gone, Uyosi. But your legacy will live on at the Great Plains Zoo!
