KXRB’s Randy McDaniel Announces Retirement
Who knew fifty years could slip by so quickly? In the words of Kenny Chesney, "Don’t Blink."
It was in May of 1974 that I began my radio career and I’m proud to say that career has been spent entirely in the state of South Dakota.
Winner. Aberdeen. Brookings/Volga. Sturgis. Rapid City. And since March of 1999, Sioux Falls.
Yes, for the past 26 years, I’ve been a proud member of the Results Radio family, first on KSOO (just down the hall) and since 2007, with KXRB.
For so many years we’d get together on the ‘McDaniel Mess’, have a little fun, and play great country music (including our Daily Dose Of The Hag). We’d share many ‘Classic Country Saturdays’ and occasionally sip an ice-cold Grain Belt longneck.
As many of you know I spent most of 2024 battling a serious health issue. In March of ’24, I was diagnosed with Stage III colo/rectal cancer.
I’ve written in some detail about my ongoing cancer journey, so suffice it to say here, that I went through radiation, chemotherapy infusions, countless chemo pills, and medical appointments.

But enough about all that.
The good news? As I write this, I am in remission. Of course, the battle isn’t over. My immediate future includes ‘continued care’ with things like regular CT scans, MRIs, and endoscopies. But believe me, I know I am blessed.
As I continue this fight, the time has come to lay down my headphones and put them away in a special corner of my heart. A corner that holds so many memories. Those memories all bend warm.
Living Legend: Randy McDaniel Celebrates 50 Years Behind a Mic
I am retiring from KXRB and my half-century radio career. Who to thank? More people than I can name here. Some are names you know, the people you hear and love every day on the air here at KXRB.
And many names you don’t know, those behind-the-scene folks that I saw every day. I worked with them all. Laughed with them all. And occasionally cried with them, too. They will always be family to me.
But most of all, a heartfelt thank you to all of you folks who joined me for so many years on ‘The McDaniel Mess’. We sure had a good time, didn’t we? Bless your hearts for being there. It was indeed an honor to be a small part of your life.
And so life goes on. And hey, if we bump into each other, let’s have a cup of coffee. Or maybe an ice-cold Grain Belt longneck.
I’ll miss you.
Your old Mess friend,
Randy
