PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The Pierre City Commission is hiring a Minneapolis consulting firm to analyze how much it will cost to run a proposed recreation and events center.

Architects are designing a $14.5 million facility to replace the old downtown City Auditorium, which hosted everything from sporting events to governor inaugurations but was closed in 2010 because of structural issues and later demolished.

The city estimate it will cost about $450,000 a year to run the proposed events center. City Manager Leon Schochenmaier says many members of the public want more solid data.

The city will pay $15,000 to the Conventions, Sports & Leisure International firm for an analysis. The report is due by April 1.
