Most Affordable Midwest States to Live In
We've been watching as the cost of nearly everything goes up and our bank accounts are feeling it. But there's good news for some midwesterners, there are a few midwest states that are the most affordable places to live in the country! Sadly, no, the Land of 10,000 Lakes did not make the list.
The most affordable states in the entire country were based on 2022 data from the Council for Community and Economic Research. Slacker then took the data and used it to determine their rankings for the 25 most affordable states in the country. I'll have that list a little later.
In their rankings, Slacker has the Cost of Living Index. This Cost of Living Index is "a percentage of the U.S. average, set at 100." So if a state has a Cost of Living Index of 90, that means the cost to live there is 10% less than the national average.
Most Affordable States in the Midwest
Here are there midwest states that ranked well:
25. North Dakota (Cost of Living Index: 97.1)
23. Wisconsin (Cost of Living Index: 95.5)
21. South Dakota (Cost of Living Index: 94.5)
17. Illinois (Cost of Living Index: 92.6)
14. Michigan (Cost of Living Index: 92.2)
13. Nebraska (Cost of Living Index: 91.9)
12. Ohio (Cost of Living Index: 91.9)
8. Indiana (Cost of Living Index: 89.9)
7. Iowa (Cost of Living Index: 89.2)
6. Missouri (Cost of Living Index: 89.1)
3. Kansas (Cost of Living Index: 87.5)
Look at Iowa, our neighboring state, coming in the top 10! Also, I'm realizing that Minnesota is the ONLY midwest state that's not one of the most affordable places to live...
