As you may have heard, there is a very real chance that the social media phenomenon, TikTok, may be banned from the US in the near future. But if you thought this meant people would be putting down their phones, think again.

Several candidates could potentially replace the TikTok void in this country, and many Minnesotans have already made their choice. However, the new app they're flocking toward may have the same issues as the old one.

According to Fox Business, hundreds of thousands of Americans, both creators and users alike, have been leaving TikTok in recent days, for Rednote.

What is Rednote? Well, ironically, it's very similar to TikTok.

Shanghai-based Xiaohongshu, nicknamed RedNote in the U.S., catapulted to the top of the app store in the free apps section this week as social media users fled TikTok in anticipation of its shutdown on Sunday, Jan. 20.

In just two days, more than 700,000 new users joined Xiaohongshu, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

U.S. downloads of RedNote were up more than 200% year-over-year this week, and 194% from the week prior, according to estimates from app data research firm Sensor Tower, the report said.

While Rednote may be surging among US social media users, it (potentially) carries the same risks as TikTok itself.

What is Rednote? According to the App itself, Rednote is a "Lifestyle platform that inspires people to discover and connect with a range of diverse lifestyles."

But lawmakers in the US have very similar concerns about Rednote as they do with TikTok. Why? Because, like TikTok, Rednote is a Chinese company. These security concerns include the possibility that the App could be collecting valuable data on American users.
