Here Are The 25 Biggest Snowstorms Ever In Minnesota
We may not have much snow on the ground right now, but Minnesota has had its share of big snowstorms that have dumped a lot of the white stuff on us over the years!
Most winters here in the Land of 10,000 Usually-Snow-And-Ice-Covered Lakes are filled with cold weather and snow. Lots of snow. Of course, as we know, that wasn't really the case in the winter of 2024, and so far, it hasn't been the case during the first weeks of January 2025 either.
According to this MPR story, we’ve managed just 9.7 inches of snow across much of the state and Twin Cities so far this season. That's over a foot short of the usual amount of snow we see in mid-January, which is over 24 inches!
But it *is* snowing this winter-- just not in Minnesota. The latest historic snowstorm that hit the Gulf Coast area of the country earlier this week dumped around 8 inches of snow on the city of New Orleans. That's way more than we have on the ground across Minnesota right now, as most of the snow that fell here in December melted during warm weather over the holidays. When was the last time the Big Easy was snowier than the Bold North?!?
And, it's not just Minnesota, either. The National Weather Service in Anchorage, Alaska noted that their area has only seen 3.8 inches of snow since Dec. 1, which is around 2 feet less than normal-- and far less than the amount of snow that fell in and around Louisiana.

But, historically, of course, the North Star State *has* been home to some huge snowstorms. Has anyone heard of the Halloween Blizzard of 1991? (Spoiler alert: Minnesotans of a certain age LOVE to talk about this storm, and with good reason, as you'll see below.) Or maybe the Big Snowstorm of 2010 that collapsed the roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis? Or how about the Big Mess of January 2023?
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has compiled a list of the Top 25 Snowfalls to hit the Twin Cities. They scoured Minnesota weather records dating all the way back to 1884 to compile the following snowy list. See how many of these big winter storms YOU remember:
