Nebraska, South Dakota, Experience Weekend Earthquakes
People from Nebraska to South Dakota experienced the earth moving under them Sunday afternoon, December 10, 2023.
According to the US Geological Survey, a large area of South Dakota centered around Wakonda experienced a mild to weak earthquake Sunday afternoon.
The rare South Dakota event took place 5.1 miles under the surface and registered a magnitude of 3.0.
While earthquakes are rare in South Dakota they do occur from time to time. The most significant earthquake recorded in South Dakota happened near Wessington Springs on November 6, 1911, with an estimated magnitude of around 4.5.
Another nearby earthquake Sunday afternoon was just south of Hastings, Nebraska and measured 4.2 on the Richter Scale, according to the US Geological Survey.
The US Geological survey asks residents to report it if you felt either of these events on Sunday as it helps them to really "zero in on the effects."

The strongest earthquake recorded in Nebraska's history happened on April 24, 1882. The quake, centered near Valentine, had an estimated magnitude of around 5.5. On this occasion there were two quakes about 45 minutes apart that was felt from Lincoln, to Omaha, to Sioux City.
