Sure Sioux Falls recently had about a foot of snow. And sure, last year it seemed like the snow would never end here. But that doesn't mean Sioux Falls is an extremely snowy city.

Not at all. In fact, many of South Dakota's snowiest cities are in the western half of the state.

You don't have to love winter to live in a snowy state like South Dakota, but you do have to know how to navigate it. It's just a bonus if you can appreciate the snowscapes our winters leave for us every year.

If you are a winter aficionado, then it probably doesn't come as news to you about these snowiest cities.

The Top 10 Snowiest South Dakota Cities

Lead - What's in a name? This small city leads the way, snow-wise, with over 182 inches of snow every year. If you're doing the math, that's over 15 feet of snow every year!
North Spearfish - This area of the state gets about 135 inches of snow.
Deadwood - This gold rush city of about 1,200 people gets 134 inches of snow.
Spearfish - The home of Black Hills State University gets 132 inches of snow.
Sturgis - Sturgis rallygoers wouldn't be thrilled to ride in the 120 inches of snow the city piles up in the winter.
Belle Fourche - Smack dab in the middle of the country, the geological center of the United States gets 113 inches of snow every year.
Summerset - One of the newest cities in South Dakota, Summerset was incorporated in 2005. Its current population is around 2,200 and its yearly snowfall is about 57 inches.
Hill City - Known for the 1880 train and many other tourist stops, this city of 1,400 people gets plenty of snow every winter at 56 inches.
Custer - This little city of around 1,900 people is nestled in an area just minutes away from Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and numerous other beautiful and interesting attractions. They also get a decent amount of snow at around 55.8 inches.
Clear Lake - This county seat of Deuel County in northeastern South Dakota is a rural community with around 1,200 people and it receives around 53.5 inches of snow every year.

A Survival Guide For Your First Winter in South Dakota

Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and the rest of the Sioux Empire (AKA southeastern South Dakota) are welcoming thousands of new residents every year.
