Paccar Inc. has issued a recall of more than 17,600 Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks produced between 2018-2020 due to safety concerns.

According to Freight Waves, an investigation was launched in August of 2020 after a report was filed about axel failure. This month, the recall was called because axel arm fasteners that attach the steering arm and steering knuckle had increased risks associated with them.

A failure of these fasteners can result in a crash or injury.

According to the report filed with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reported failures happened while driving trucks at low speeds- which is when steering forces are highest.

The vehicles that are involved in the recall are 2018-2020 Kenworth T270, T370, T440, T470, T660, T680, T800, T880, W900, and W990, and Peterbilt 330, 337, 348, 365, 367, 389, 520, 567 and 579 models.

Out of the 17,641 trucks involved, the company only expects 1 percent of vehicles to be affected.

Many tests were done with trucks in cooperation with the axel company Dana Inc starting September 2020 and found no issues, but Paccar did decide to go through with the recall on April 18th, 2022.

Paccar Inc is currently looking for a fix to the problem and is continuing to look into the cause of the issue.

Dealers and owners of the recalled vehicles are expected to get a letter notifying them of the recall on June 24, 2022.

The recall is on trucks located nationwide. More information on the recall can be found here.
