Iowa Barber Gives Haircuts to Children in Exchange for Them Reading Stories to Him
It’s almost time to go back to school for many young kids. The seconda annual second Back to School Bash in Dubuque, Iowa took place on August 8, 2015 in which community partners and organizations help get kids and families off on the right feet for the upcoming school year. Well one local barber, who works at the Spark Family Hair Salon, knew exactly how to contribute.
The father of two decided to give free haircuts to kids who would read to him. St. Mark Youth Enrichment gave away books during the event, some of which were read to Holmes. Holmes said:
“The kids would come in, and I would say, “Go to the table and get a book you might like, and if you can’t read it, I’ll help you understand and we can read it together.”
Holmes said he is considering starting a monthly event in which kids can receive free haircuts if they read. The first full day of classes in Dubuque, Iowa is September 1, 2015.
