Governor to Meet with Nonprofit, Transgender South Dakotans

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Governor Dennis Daugaard office says he will meet with members from a Sioux Falls nonprofit who want to introduce him to some transgender South Dakotans.

The governor's office had initially said Daugaard's schedule wouldn't allow for him to meet with The Center For Equality. Spokeswoman Kelsey Pritchard now says the governor plans to meet with the group this week or next week.

On Tuesday, the state Senate passed a bill that would require South Dakota students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their sex at birth.

If Daugaard approves it, South Dakota would become the first state in the nation to pass such a law. The governor has not said whether he would sign the measure.

Pritchard says Daugaard will also meet with bill proponents.
