What is the ‘Golden Triangle’ of South Dakota?
We just launched another pheasant hunting season here in South Dakota, and if you've spent any amount of time around hunters, you've probably heard of them talking about the 'Golden Triangle", but what (and where) exactly is it?
The Golden Triangle is the area within three south-central South Dakota towns, and it's widely regarded as having the best pheasant hunting in the entire state.

You could make the argument that introducing the pheasant to the state of South Dakota was one of the smartest things mankind ever did. The fowl adapted perfectly to the state's climate when they were first brought over from China, around 1908. In the 100+ years since, the birds definitely have their favorite spots within the state's boundaries.
For example, while southeast South Dakota (including Sioux Falls, Vermillion, and Yankton) has its fair share of pheasants, it's not the most ideal spot to find them. Several factors are at play here, including rainfall averages and farming, and the western part of the state (Rapid City, Deadwood, Sturgis) is a bit too arid for pheasants to thrive.
That leaves the middle, and if you guessed that's where the Golden Circle is found, you'd be right on the money. Specifically, the Golden Circle for pheasants within the state is in between the towns of Chamberlain, Gregory, and Winner.
While hunting within this area is said to be the best, it's not the only great spot for pheasant hunting in SD. Let's not forget, Redfield is the pheasant capital of South Dakota, and it's over 100 miles away from the Golden Circle.
South Dakota has over 5 million acres of public land, so, whether it's within the Golden Circle or somewhere else, you're bound to find your own favorite spot somewhere. Check out the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Website for more information.
