Farmer’s Almanac Hints At Cool & Wet South Dakota Spring Ahead
Monday, March 20th is officially the first day of spring, which is today! It might not seem like it with snow still on the ground. However, the spring outlook from the Farmer's Almanac is about to turn your winter blues frown upside down.
It's no secret that Sioux Falls and the Sioux Empire had one of the snowiest winters to date. The good news is the snow is slowly going to turn into rain. As far as temperatures go, hold off on the flip-flops and shorts for now.
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the spring equinox marks "the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere." Specifically, spring officially begins at 5:24 PM EDT (4:24 PM in South Dakota). The spring outlook for South Dakota is not too hot or too cold...just right.
The spring equinox forecast from the Farmer's Almanac explains "cold temperatures may be gripping many parts of the country, extending the 'shiver and shovel' portion of our outlook. We (Farmer's Almanac)are predicting a 'soggy, shivery spring ahead.' " If spring is anything like winter, it's going to be rainy and wet in South Dakota.
Apparently, spring is going to "take its sweet time to arrive."
Snow is still on the brain for a lot of people. So will we see more snow this spring? Yes and no. The Farmer's Almanac says South Dakota will be "unusually active over the nation’s heartland with frequent heavy-to-severe thunderstorms predicted." However, our news partners at Dakota News Now explain we could see a little snow this week.
We are tracking a weak storm system that will bring us a wintry mix Tuesday morning before changing over to rain Tuesday afternoon. It looks like the precipitation will fall as all snow across Central and Northeast South Dakota where minor accumulations will be possible. We get a break in the action on Wednesday before another system brings a chance for light snow on Thursday. Stay tuned!
Spring and summer will arrive soon! Just think about the great outdoors, traveling, and barbequing on the grill...eventually.
