SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) — Thieves targeted three donation bins and the money inside at the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives in Spearfish.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports that the theft was discovered Sunday evening. Booth Society Executive Director April Gregory says it's unfortunate that someone would steal goodwill donation money. She calls it "an ugly thing to happen."

Two of the bins were removed and stolen, and a padlock was cut off the third. Police Sgt. Steve Hofmann says the theft required tools.

Donations assist with the maintenance and visitor services at the hatchery, which is down to one federal employee following closure threats in 2012 due to federal budget constraints. It remains open to the public at no charge.
