Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani Expected Their Relationship to Be a Rebound
When Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani kicked off their romance three years ago, they never imagined it would take them this far. In a new interview, Shelton admits that both artists thought their relationship was nothing more than a rebound.
"I think if Gwen and I were being honest right now, talking about this," Shelton tells Willie Geist on Sunday Today, "I think in the back of our minds we both kind of thought, 'This is a rebound deal because we're both coming out of a pretty low spot in our lives and we're kind of clinging to each other to get through this.'"
Shelton and Stefani began their courtship on the set of The Voice, just as they were both emerging from highly publicized divorces. Shelton and Miranda Lambert announced their divorce in July of 2015, while Stefani and husband Gavin Rossdale, frontman for the rock band Bush, separated that August. Stefani and Rossdale had been married since September of 2002, while Shelton and Lambert had been married since May of 2011.
"When I was going through my divorce, I hit rock bottom just like anybody does when they go through something that devastating," Shelton admits. "It's a miracle that I met somebody that was going through the same exact thing that I was at the exact same moment in time." The country star has often said that he feels as though Stefani saved his life during that time.
Shelton and Stefani officially confirmed their relationship that November. What started as a friendship forged in adversity grew into an unexpected love story, which Shelton says just keeps getting better.
"Now here we are, going on three years later, and every day that goes by, it just feels like a stronger bond between the two of us. It constantly feels like it's going to the next level," Shelton says. "That's the only way I think either one of us could probably describe it."
Shelton's full interview with Geist will air on Sunday (June 24).
