STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — A Meade County commissioner accused of damaging private property has pleaded not guilty to felony and misdemeanor charges.

KBHB radio reports that Alan Aker appeared in court Tuesday on a felony charge of intentional damage to property and a misdemeanor count of trespassing. Trial was scheduled for Aug. 24.

Aker runs a wood home products company. The charges against him stem from a dispute over payment for a private job contract.

Authorities allege that Aker entered a client's property in Deadwood, sawed off part of a deck railing and took it with him. Aker said he hadn't been fully paid for the job. The property owner maintains the project wasn't complete.

The County Commission last month voted to suspend Aker. He recently lost his bid for re-election.
