It's been ten years since NCAA Division I college football came to South Dakota, when South Dakota State made the jump from Division II in 2004.

Since then, the number of D-I schools in the state has doubled, when South Dakota moved up in 2008.

But long before Division I football arrived in the Rushmore State, Division I recruiters were coming and taking South Dakota's best high school football players out of the state.

So where is the current crop of D-I talent coming from?

Mode's Benn Stancil used information from ESPN.com to create an in-depth map to show where the top football recruits are.

In South Dakota, Minnehaha County accounts for more than half (21) of the 41 South Dakotans currently playing in Division I.

In all, 14 of South Dakota's 66 counties (21%) have at least one player at the D-I level.

Nationally, it's not surprising that the vast majority of the recruits are coming from these warmer weather these major metropolitan areas:

Los Angeles

San Diego

Phoenix

Houston

Dallas

Atlanta

Miami

Tampa

According to the data, only two cities in colder climates are considered recruiting 'hotbeds':

Chicago

Pittsburgh
