Martin Truex, Jr. Rockets to Win Chicagoland First Race of NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase
Martin Truex, Jr. raced hard on the topside of the track late in the race and drove away from the field to victory Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway. It was the first race of The Chase To The Championship in NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Truex lost a lap early in the race when he had to come in for a tire change due to a right front flat on lap 69 of 270. But was back on the lead lap at the second caution of the race on lap 120 when Brian Scott spun off the fourth turn.
Truex took the top spot on the restart in overtime on lap 269. He was fourth and on the outside.
Then quickly overtook Ryan Blaney, Kasey Kahne and Carl Edwards, who had stayed out on old tires under the final caution.
Joey Logano came from sixth to second in the two-lap overtime, trailing Truex at the finish line by .776 seconds. Chase Elliott won a drag race for third against fellow Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate Blaney, with Brad Keselowski crossing the finish line in fifth. See where your driver finished.
Jimmie Johnson led the most laps of the race at 118, but came in 12th after serving a pass-through penalty for a pit road speeding infraction.
