Talking to Kids after a Major Tragedy
How did you feel on Monday after trying to digest the news of 59 people being killed and over 500 injured in the mass shooting in Las Vegas? I know exactly how you felt, like me, sick, sad and really confused.
Now, I have an 8-year old son, and that is a very sensitive situation. For a child, this is completely confusing.
I would caution watching continuous news coverage on TV. Even though you, as an adult, want the latest details, the video of the shooting playing over and over again, could lead a child to believe it's still happening.
They can become scared. And my son had a lot of questions, many of which required delicate answers.
The most important thing I did, was to assure him that the bad guy was gone forever. And I held him close to make sure he knew he was 100 percent safe and secure.
