Heavy rain in eastern South Dakota over the past week put a temporary halt to the corn and soybean harvests in that region.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says South Dakota's corn crop is forecast to be down 6 percent from last year.

Corn production is forecast at 15.093 billion bushels. Corn supplies are still forecast at a record 16.859 billion bushels.

Stocks of corn and soybeans in South Dakota were up from the previous year as last year drew to a close.

The South Dakota Corn Growers Association says South Dakota corn and soybean farmers harvested record yields in 2015.

So, if you work on a farm, how do you like it. Dry in the spring, so you can get your planting done? Or wetter, where you have to scramble to get crops in on time.

Farmers might need to plant deeper than usual 1.5-inch depth because of the dryer soil but no deeper than 3 inches.

The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop progress report that about 5 percent of the corn crop is seeded, near the five-year average pace.
