LEAD, S.D. (AP) — A man shot in an exchange of fire with law enforcement during a pursuit in Lead has died.

The South Dakota Attorney General's Office says 31-year-old Rory Gunderman, of Sundance, Wyoming, died at a Rapid City hospital Wednesday.

Authorities say Gunderman fired shots at Lawrence County sheriff's deputies during a pursuit on foot and the deputies fired back, injuring the suspect. The foot pursuit ensued after Gunderman drove a reportedly stolen vehicle onto a dead-end road near a ski resort.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports Gunderman suffered at least one head wound.

The deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation will issue details of the incident within a month.
