PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota State Historical Society is preparing to release a book about frontiersman Hugh Glass, whose tale is told in the Hollywood blockbuster "The Revenant."

KELO-AM reports that the book "Hugh Glass: Grizzly Survivor" by Mitchell historian James D. McLaird is to be released in May.

Glass was attacked by a grizzly bear in South Dakota in 1823. He crawled 200 miles to get revenge on his fur trapping companions who left him for dead. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar on Sunday for his portrayal of Glass.

Historical Society Press Director Nancy Tystad Koupal says Glass is a "larger-than-life character" but that little has been done to create an accurate biography.

Other books published by the state-owned press have featured Wild Bill Hickok and Laura Ingalls Wilder.
