Anyone familiar with South Dakota already knows the Rushmore state is filled full of kind, caring, compassionate people, who are always willing to give their time and money to a worthy cause.

That fact was confirmed yet again, as KDLT TV reports South Dakota has shown up on a list of the Top 5 states in the nation for having the largest percentage of volunteers per capita to respond to Hurricane Matthew according to the American Red Cross.

According to the folks at the Red Cross, South Dakota was right behind the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina when it came to people volunteering to help out Hurricane Matthew victims.

To date, 27 Red Cross workers from South Dakota have been deployed. Another five volunteers are scheduled to be sent by the end of this week.

The damage from Hurricane Matthew is now estimated to be around $6 billion according to the latest figures from the U.S. Government. Making it the costliest hurricane since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 the Red Cross says.
