SIOUX FALL, S.D. (AP) — Public works officials in Sioux Falls are proposing to more than double what it costs to connect multi-family housing developments to city infrastructure.

Officials say the city needs more money from developers to pay for extending roads, sewer and water systems on the outskirts of Sioux Falls.

The proposal follows a consultant's conclusion that the city's platting fees underestimate the demand, wear and tear on city infrastructure from larger apartment buildings. Other residential, industrial, office and commercial developments would see more modest increases.

Some including developer Garry Harr say a fee hike will be passed along to buyers and renters and will add to the cost of housing.

Councilman Greg Jamison says he's inclined to support the proposal but worries it might affect the economy.
