With all due respect to our veterans who have served our country, I mean no disrespect to your organization when I call the Sioux Falls American Legion a dive bar. It’s a good thing!

We showed up at the American Legion around 5:30 PM on a Friday night. The place was packed. As a matter of fact, there wasn’t any place to sit in the main bar, except for a small table by the door. We approached the party that was sitting next to this table and asked if we could sit next to them. They invited us to grab a stool. We ordered our drinks and looked at a menu. Friday night is Steak Night. You can get a 6 ounce sirloin steak, baked potato, vegetable, salad, bun and dessert for $9. Seriously!  And, it was good! I had the steak and my friend, Dusti, had a shrimp basket. Our new friends, Kasey, Condy, Carol, Rich and Pat, were great company. They come to the Legion on Friday nights for the cheap beer. We had a great time talking to them. Condy is a veteran.  Thank you for your service.

The original reason we chose the American Legion on our Dive Bar Tour was because Dusti said the Legion makes the best Chuck Norris drink. If you’ve ever been to the American Legion, you know they don’t skimp on the liquor in their drinks. A Chuck Norris is cherry Dr. McGillicuddy’s and Liquid Ice Energy Drink. It’s a spendy drink anywhere else, but at the Legion, I think we paid $5. Cheap, strong drinks and the lack of fanciness make this place a dive bar.

The Legion has live bands every Friday and Saturday night. They post the schedule on their Facebook page.

Every weekday, the Legion serves lunch from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. It’s the best lunch deal in town. You get entrees like spaghetti, meatloaf, chicken fried steak, and tater tot hotdish for only $4. There’s a new special every day.

Would we go back?  Are you kidding?  Of course!  We're going back to meet up with our new friends. They said they'd go to the Log Cabin with us.

Here’s a tour of the American Legion.
