SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Severe storms are creating a swath of damage through eastern South Dakota.

KELO-TV reports that thousands of people in the region are without power.

The Argus Leader reports that winds gusting to 100 mph downed trees and power poles in Garretson, and blew over four large tanks at a fertilizer plant. A gas leak prompted the evacuation of a mobile home park. The local fire hall was opened as an emergency shelter. No injuries were immediately reported.

Only emergency personnel were being allowed into Garretson.

The strong winds damaged buildings throughout the region, including some homes in the Garretson area, grain bins and a century-old barn near Corsica.

Wind gusts strong enough to down trees and blow over Dumpsters were reported in Pierre.
