Because South Dakota ranks in the top five honey producing states, Governor Dennis Daugaard has made September 'Honey Month' in South Dakota.

The state has 225 beekeepers that take care of about 324,000 colonies.

Several factors like the soil, topography and the summertime weather have helped South Dakota cash in on the honey crop.  According to the state's Department of Agriculture, more than 14 million pounds of honey were produced in South Dakota last year with a value of over $30 million.
